Roaccutane pills contain Isotretinoin as their active ingredient. Isotretinoin is part of a class of medications called retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. When taken orally, Isotretinoin reduces the production of natural oil (sebum) in the skin.
Acne results from an overproduction of sebum by hyperactive sebaceous glands in the skin. This excess sebum clogs the glands, hindering the free flow of oil and leading to a buildup of sebum beneath the skin. The bacteria that contribute to acne thrive in these conditions, feeding on sebum and producing waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, causing inflammation and spots.
Roaccutane works by reducing both the size and activity of the sebaceous glands, subsequently lowering sebum production. This helps prevent gland blockage and decreases the likelihood of bacterial growth, as well as reducing skin inflammation.
Due to potential serious side effects, Roaccutane must be prescribed and monitored by a dermatologist. It is specifically indicated for treating severe acne (such as nodular or conglobate acne, or cases at risk of permanent scarring) that has not improved with conventional therapies, including oral antibiotics and topical treatments.
Initially, your acne may worsen at the beginning of treatment, but this typically resolves within 7 to 10 days of ongoing therapy. In most instances, a complete or near-complete reduction of acne is achieved after a 12 to 16 week treatment course, and you are likely to experience prolonged periods without acne. Additional treatment courses are generally not advised unless a clear relapse occurs after stopping treatment. If a repeat course is necessary, it should not commence until at least eight weeks after the last treatment, as acne may still improve during this period.
Patients undergoing Roaccutane treatment may experience side effects such as dry skin, headaches, elevated liver enzymes, muscle and joint pain, hair loss, vision problems, eye surface inflammation, nausea, inflammatory bowel disease, and bone disorders.
